A yoga mat is a mat placed on the floor for yoga practice. Yoga mats are categorized into traditional mats and alignment mats: traditional mats are plain (without lines), whereas alignment mats feature lines that-in addition to serving the standard functions of a mat-assist with body alignment during poses. Common materials include foamed rubber, TPE, PVC, EVA, latex, and NBR, as well as materials like suede and PU; notably, latex mats may cause allergic reactions.
Yoga mats feature a uniform surface texture and a resilient, cushioned feel; they offer excellent grip, elasticity, flatness, slip resistance, and skin-friendliness, along with strong tear resistance and insulation against cold floors. They are also suitable for other fitness activities, children's play areas, or outdoor camping. Thickness and size should be selected based on the practitioner's experience level: beginners might use mats 5–7 mm thick, while advanced practitioners often prefer 3–5 mm; common dimensions include 61x173 cm and 61x183 cm. To maintain hygiene, weekly cleaning is recommended; avoid using harsh disinfectants or exposing the mat to direct sunlight, and roll it up for storage when not in use. Mats usually have distinct sides: the textured or patterned side faces the floor, while the smooth side faces the body (though some brands mark the intended top side). The impact of a yoga mat on an infant depends on the safety of the material. Discarded yoga mats are classified as "other waste" (general refuse).
