Yoga Mat Materials

Even if you are a yoga beginner, it is best to avoid low-end yoga mats made of EVA material. If you simply want a reliable mat for your practice, opt for one made of foamed PVC; it offers good elasticity and slip resistance at a reasonable price, and is easy to carry-especially if you have a yoga bag. Even if the small foam bumps get crushed after prolonged use, it is no great loss; you can simply replace it, making it both convenient and economical.
Low-end EVA Material
EVA is a type of rigid foam-often used for shoe soles (such as those on thick-soled platform shoes)-and tends to have a strong odor. While yoga blocks are also made from this material, it is not ideal for yoga mats due to poor elasticity and slip resistance. However, because it is very cheap-often available for just 10 to 20-odd yuan-it still sells well on the market. Buyers should therefore carefully check the material to avoid purchasing unsafe yoga mats.
Mid-range Foamed PVC Material
Foamed PVC is currently the most common material for yoga mats. PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is widely used in the manufacture of everyday items like luggage and electrical wiring. The material itself does not have a harsh chemical smell; any odor present is usually similar to that of rubber. Foamed PVC is harmless to the human body; health risks arise only when recycled materials (secondary stock) are used in production. Foamed PVC mats offer excellent elasticity and slip resistance, lie flat and stable on the floor, and are reasonably priced, making them very popular; indeed, 80% of yoga mats today are made from foamed PVC. These mats typically retail for between 40 and 90 yuan, placing them in the mid-range category.
You may also come across foamed PVC yoga mats selling for as little as 10 or 20-odd yuan. This usually happens in one of three scenarios:
(1) Recycled PVC material is used for the foaming process, thereby reducing production costs.
(2) Corners are cut or other additives are mixed in to reduce the amount of PVC used, thus lowering costs. The weight of such mats often differs from the standard; excessive foaming agents can result in a strong odor and an overly light mat, while excessive weight can hinder usability. Ideally, a yoga mat should be portable, and manufacturing trends are shifting toward lighter materials.
(3) Indoor anti-slip mats or low-end camping mats made of foamed PVC are sometimes passed off as yoga mats; these mats often lack standardized specifications. Of course, low-priced foamed PVC yoga mats are not necessarily inferior products; the lower price might stem from different sourcing channels that eliminate intermediary costs, or from promotional sales intended to capture market share and boost volume. Therefore, when selecting foamed PVC mats, buyers should be wary of the three types of substandard or counterfeit products mentioned above.
High-end TPE Material
TPE is an eco-friendly material that is recyclable and reusable, helping to reduce pollution. Yoga mats made of TPE are characterized by excellent elasticity, superior non-slip performance, good toughness, and high tensile strength.
However, due to the high cost of the material, these mats are primarily targeted at the European, American, and high-end Chinese markets. Prices generally start at 100 RMB, typically ranging from 100 to 300 RMB, with premium models exceeding 300 RMB. If your budget allows, they are certainly an excellent choice.
